Notes: |
The Saazer area is traditionally, and to this day, an important growing area of hops of very high quality. Pilsen (where Pilsner beer was invented and is still crafted) is not far away. Joseph is a "Hopfenwimmer", purportedly a Swiss and Austrian expression for a winemaker (although I have not been able to confirm this). Possibly it may refer to someone who grows crops (like hops or vines) on trellises, which cover the hillsides in this area of the Czech Republic and southeastern Germany. The godfather Václav Prais has the same occupation as Joseph. The godmother Anna Prais is the wife of a Hopfenwimmer.
